Margarethe Cufer, Hans Hollein, Adolf Krischanitz, Hermann Czech, Arata Isozaki, Roman Delugan, Gustav Peichl, Heinz Neumann, Michael Loudon, Wilhelm Holzbauer
After the covering of the Danube riverside motorway, this site, which originally had been singled out for the aborted Vienna-Budapest World’s Fair of 1995, was envisioned by the development company WED to become a new urban expansion area. Since 1998, intense construction activities include housing estates and office towers in this satellite centre efficiently linked to Vienna’s city by the U1 Underground line.
Reachability: U1-Kaisermühlen - Vienna Int. Centre
Accessibility: The open-air zones and churches are publicly accessible, the lobby of the Tech Gate Tower is publicly accessible, model of Donau City on 1st floor
02Tech Gate Tower
Donau-City-Straße 1, 1210 Wien
Holzbauer und Partner
Together with the entire Tech Gate ensemble, the Tech Gate Tower forms a kind of gateway to the Donau City site. The prismatic, triangular tower with its curving glass façade is placed atop a "bastion" built before in conjunction with Tech Gate. The building is capped off majestically with an event-venue top storey featuring a terrace.

03ARES Tower
Donaucitystrasse 1, 1220 Wien
Neumann & Partner
Two high-rise slabs of roughly 100 metres vie with each other for height. Arranged parallel though slightly displaced one vis-à-vis the other, the two narrow blocks shine with a cool and glassy look, elegant entrance hall, exquisite furnishings and classy sky lobby at the heart of the Donau City development, thus adding another chic element to the group of international office high-rises in the area.

Leonard Bernsteinstrasse 10, 1220 Wien
Hans Hollein, Neumann & Partner
The interplay of receding and projecting elements structures the mass of this roughly 100-metre glass tower situated along the north-western edge of the Donau City site. A wide, cantilevered canopy roof above the large, elegant sky lobby with terrace marks the outstanding silhouette of this splendidly appointed building.

05Restaurant Yellow 2003-2004
Mariahilferstraße 127/ Mariahilfer Gürtel 34, 1060 Wien
BEHF Architekten
A V-shaped layout divides the yellow-illuminated Asian restaurant near the Western Railway Station into two longitudinal sections, i.e. restaurant and bar. Kitchen, sanitary units and storerooms are situated in-between. A hidden surprise effect is created by the shiny red-and-white, avant-garde tatami room as an extravagant private facility.
06Enlargement of Stadthalle Wien 2003-2006
Vogelweidplatz 14, 1150 Wien
Dietrich | Untertrifaller
This addition to the Stadthalle, Roland Rainer’s established masterpiece, was designed by a team of Vorarlberg architects and sensitively yet self-confidently engages in a difficult dialogue by subtly interpreting the scales and materials, structures and building morphology of the main wing.
Client: Wiener Stadthalle Betriebs- und Veranstaltungsges. m. b. H
Building type: Sports and recreation
Reachability: U6 Burggasse - Stadthalle
Accessibility: During events
The Stadthalle Wien, for which an international competition won by Roland Rainer (1958) was held, is characterised by the big event hall’s unique structural strength (no supports are needed), spatial flexibility and perfect emergency exit organisation. Additions: Stadthallenbad (1974), Hall E with Johanna Rainer (1994).
07Stadtbahn stations 1894-1899
Wien
Otto Wagner
In 1894, Otto Wagner was commissioned with the architectural design of the Stadtbahn network with its 36 stations, viaducts and bridges over a total length of 40 km. With respect to their design, place in architectural history and Vienna’s urbanistic tissue, the station buildings, which were planned for above- and belowground line routing, are outstanding examples of mass transit structures.
Reachability: f.e.: U6 stations between Nußdorfer Straße and Gumpendorfer Straße
Accessibility: The stations are publicly accessible
In addition to the Stadtbahn arches and station buildings, Otto Wagner’s structures for mass transit also include the Imperial Pavilion, Gürtel Bridge and Nussdorf Lock.
08Housing development Spittelau 1994-2005
Spittelauer Lände, 1090 Wien
Zaha M. Hadid
Three acute-angled concrete structures, which largely comprise housing units as well as some offices, café and restaurant premises, wind their way through, around and above the historic viaducts of the former Stadtbahn suburban line. However, this urbanistically highly interesting location at the junction of Danube Canal and Gürtel has proven very problematic for housing purposes.
09Office building Skyline2002-2008
Heiligenstädterstraße 29-31, 1190 Wien
Tillner & Willinger, RAHM Architekten
Tillner&Willinger create an outstanding office building with boldly curving, elliptical lines for one of the most exciting hubs of the city, set above the Stadtbahn arches of Spittelau. The lightweight steel-glass structure contrasts with the massive viaducts and encompasses a sickle-shaped courtyard.
