ViennaTopical - 2006 until 2007
The ViennaTopical Tour, which is updated annually, will take you to a selection of the best current buildings in Vienna.
01Large-capacity bus garage Leopoldau 2004-2006
Pfendlergasse 6, 1210 Wien
fasch&fuchs.
This remarkably attractive, longitudinal volume offering parking space for 230 buses was erected on the former site of the Leopoldau gasworks. Optimum daylight utilisation in the slanting concrete halls and a steel framing roof for the vehicles are among its both functional and aesthetic features.
02Multi-storey timber structure “Mühlweg” 2005
Mühlweg, 1210 Wien
Dietrich | Untertrifaller, Hubert Rieß, Hermann Kaufmann
Since the 2001 Technology Amendment to Vienna’s Building Code, timber is admissible as a construction material for residential buildings. The 3 units on Mühlweg – the outcome of developer’s competitions – smoothly combine concrete structures, which are essential for fire protection and static design, and comprehensive use of timber for structural, interior-design and façade-cladding purposes.
03House of Research2004-2006
Sensengasse 1, 1090 Wien
Mascha & Seethaler, Neumann & Partner
In this building, new technologies fuse architecture and research: the freestanding structure with its supple façade conveys the scientific competence on the inside to the world outside. An intelligent, energy-efficient membrane envelops the central office for research funding in Austria.
04Housing estate Nussberggasse2002-2006
Nussberggasse 2c, 1190 Wien
Hans Peter Petri
The conversion and overall rehabilitation of the former Clima Villa Hotel (Ernst Hiesmayr, 1967) into a new residential complex is characterised both by an excellent location among vineyards and unobstructed view of Vienna and by the respect paid to the original architectural concepts. A representative lobby offers access to 20 loft-style flats; an indoor swimming-pool and wine cellar complete the classy ensemble.
05Model estate 9=122000-2007
Friedhofstraße 169, 1140 Wien
Adolf Krischanitz, Steidle Architekten, Meili & Peter, Hermann Czech, Hans Kollhoff, Heinz Tesar, Diener & Diener, Peter Märkli, Max Dudler
Condensed housing at the urban periphery is the leitmotif of this innovative model estate based on a master plan by Adolf Krischanitz. The special trait of this project lies in its close interaction with the construction industry and the advantages this has produced with respect to the building material technology of concrete as well as in its architectural-spatial quality, combined with high urbanistic condensation.
06Housing estate Auer-Welsbach-Strasse2003-2007
Auer-Welsbach-Straße 63 / Kirchfeldgasse 33, 1230 Wien
Nicole David, Schauer - Schläffer - Schmoeger, Klaus Stattmann, Sandrine von Klot, the next ENTERprise – architects, Juri Troy
The new housing estate in Auer-Welsbach-Strasse charms with innovative concepts, car-free green zones and flexible layout solutions proposed by the young architects/studios. Mostly done in concrete, the 6 low structures occupy a narrow plot set between small-scale peripheral estates and large-scale housing complexes.
07Office building Skyline2002-2008
Heiligenstädterstraße 29-31, 1190 Wien
Tillner & Willinger, RAHM Architekten
Tillner&Willinger create an outstanding office building with boldly curving, elliptical lines for one of the most exciting hubs of the city, set above the Stadtbahn arches of Spittelau. The lightweight steel-glass structure contrasts with the massive viaducts and encompasses a sickle-shaped courtyard.
08Housing estate Rudolf-Virchow-Strasse 2002-2007
Rudolf-Virchow-Straße 14-16, 1210 Wien
Margarethe Cufer, Harry Glück, Rüdiger Lainer + Partner Architekten
The housing estate behind the new SOS FamilenRAThaus – a family counselling centre – encircles a large, greened interior courtyard with friendly children’s playgrounds. Glazed bridges and corridors connect the varied, yet harmoniously balanced sections by the Cufer-Glück-Lainer teams and lead to a common rooftop swimming-pool. The sections designed by s&s and Kaufmann feature novel low-energy technology.
